This document has been written in order to
promote the Ubuntu distribution for the
general public and to offer a quick and nonexhaustive panorama of the product.
Ubuntu
is an Open Source and free-of-charge
operating system, capable of running on a
large range of computers, from the oldest to
the most recent ones.
This document should
be consider as a beginner s guide for those
who would like to try the Ubuntu experience.

It is brightened up with screenshots and
briefly describes the main available software
as well as their use.
Obviously, the reference
documents — far more complete than this
one — remains those which are published on
the official website:

As a computer expert and regular user of
Ubuntu, I noticed that the operating system
that I use daily increasing arouses interest
from the people around me.
More and more
people are tempted by the idea to try out
Ubuntu, or more generally Linux, in order to
find a computer solution less restrictive, if
not more efficient than those currently
offered by the market leader.
However, one
does not enter the Linux world bound hand
and foot.
This is more often a personal
approach accompanied by a learning period
and the acquiring of new work methods.
It is
also the occasion to discover a rich and
significant means of processing information
stemming from an ideological thought
process that the user community promotes
and from which it develops its enthusiasm.

Yet, today, we do not always have the time
to take our time.
The aim of this mini-guide
is to rapidly introduce Ubuntu to the more
curious among you, in all its simplicity!

Étant connaisseur et utilisateur régulier
d’Ubuntu, j’ai remarqué que le système
d’exploitation que j’utilise au quotidien
suscite de plus en plus la curiosité des gens
qui me voient l’utiliser.
De plus en plus de
personnes sont tentées par l’idée d’essayer
Ubuntu, ou plus généralement Linux, afin de
trouver une solution informatique moins
contraignante, sinon plus efficace que celles
offertes actuellement par le leader du
marché.
Cependant, on n’entre pas dans le
monde Linux les pieds joints et les yeux
bandés.
Il s’agit là bien souvent d’une
démarche personnelle accompagnée d’un
apprentissage et de l’acquisition de
nouvelles méthodes de travail.
C’est aussi
l’occasion de découvrir une riche et une
importante information issue de la réflexion
idéologique que la communauté des
utilisateurs promeut et dont elle tire son
