History, codes and conventions of protest songs Protest songs are normally written by people who want change in their country or change in their government. The idea of the protest song is to unite the people who want change and to show others what they have to deal with. The song should have the power to inspire other people to join the movement and get behind the cause. Furthermore, the protest song plays on human emotions and makes you feel saddened, yet inspired to fight back. There are many protest songs and they spread back far into history. A lot of protest songs originated from people who were slaves, and these songs/hymns were used to give them hope, hope of freedom and a better life. For example, the song “run to Jesus” inspired Frederick Douglass to escape slavery in 1838. The religious songs, such as “Run to Jesus”, quickly merged to the work on the fields.
