Fatima al-Firhi [Insert seperate text box] In the year 245AH/859CE Fatima al-Fihri founded the University of Al-Qarawiyin, which is regarded as the first and oldest university in the world. Fatima Al-Fihri migrated with her family in the early ninth century from Qayrawan in present-day Tunisia to the city of Fez in Morocco. At that time Fez was a bustling metropolis of the Muslim world. After humble beginnings, Fatimaʼs family became very wealthy and prosperous. After the deaths of Fatimaʼs husband, father and brother shortly after one another, Fatima and her sister Mariam inherited a large amount of wealth. Both sisters decided to use their inheritance to benefit their community.
