Genre research- pop music characteristics. Since the foundations of pop formed in the 1960’s many different forms of pop has emerged including Ska, Reggae, Rocksteady and soul. A normal pop song last between two and a half to 3 and a half minutes long leaving a distinctive characteristic in their rhythmic elements. Modern day pop is considered to be the most popular genre for most age groups as it gives a feel good factor concentrating on the lyrics as much as the beat. Pop is also referred to as dance music as its normal 4/4 rhythm makes it easy to dance in time to. Many early pop singers performed as a solo act, one example of this would be Cyndi Lauper, her music was full of fun, bright colours and she did not care what people thought about her. Her music was very danceable too with catchy repetitive lyrics.
