The first recordings of fashion being illustrated started with aristocracy in the 1600s, they started by recording what they were wearing and drawing the designs of clothes that they liked at the time. In the late 1600's and 1700’s, French women of aristocracy and their dressmakers relied on sketches to see what was being worn and what clothes was fashionable at the time. If a dressmaker became rather well known within their designs then they would go on to create a book of clothes designs which would go on to be published. Some popular titles at the time include Cabinet des Modes and the Mercure Galant. By the late 1700’s there were many of these types of fashion illustrations being published in and around France. Some of these illustrated magazines in circulation would include custom designs ready to order.
