Lewin 1 Samantha Lewin Lanchih Po Chinese 158 29 November 2017 Mori’s Pudong: A Nostalgic, Authoritarian Modernism American architect William Pedersen once said, “to discuss Shanghai and its tall buildings, one must talk about the urbanism that these tall towers create...and to talk about urbanism in Asia one must talk about one man- Minoru Mori.”1 Mori is the developer of the Shanghai World Financial Center- the SWFC- as well as many other iconic developments in Asia. The SWFC was entitled by The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat as “best building of 2008”; also in 2008, Fortune Magazine named Mori “businessman of the year”. Yet amidst all this glory and praise, when analyzed, Mori’s development values and manifestations epitomize not only modern Chinese planning, but the paradoxes within it. Though changes in China’s political system and “advancements” in global urban planning should imply a more progressive and democratic development process, this is not necessarily true.
