The History of Fashion Magazines In the late 1600s and early 1700s, the first illustrations of fashion were produced, French women and dressmakers relied on sketches to see what people were wearing. These sketches were all put into books and then sold. One big name at that time was Mercure Galant. By the late 1700s, (around 1780), the French court had many journals in circulation, and some that were seen by man people, most notably: Cabinet des Modes. In the year 1867, Harper’s Bazaar began in the USA, which would provide many illustrations of European designers and their work. As well as this, seven years later a poet known as Mallame produced a fictional fashion magazine called La Derniere Mode. A huge year for the fashion industry was 1892, this is because the world-renown magazine Vogue was founded.
