City Council Passes New DWI Ordinance By: Chelsea Kubenka SAN MARCOS – An ordinance pertaining to people convicted of second drunk driving charges was passed Sunday night by city council. Councilperson Clarissa Atwell sponsored the ordinance that says people who are convicted of a second drunk driving charge will have their driver’s license revoked and must serve at least 30 days in jail. The DWI ordinance was passed by a five to three vote and will go into effect Dec. 31. “San Marcos has seen a consistent rise in both alcohol related arrests and alcohol related driving fatalities.” said Atwell. “I think this new law will save people’s lives by discouraging driving under the influence.” Councilperson Les Honeycutt, who did not support the DWI ordinance, gave a statement saying he felt the alcohol laws were strong enough and therefore passing the new law was pointless. “Texas DWI laws are already strict enough as it is,” said Honeycutt. “Current state law already mandates that those con
