P I N A T E X Use pineapple leaves to make shoes Spanish leather expert Carmen Hijosa took seven years to develop a unique fabric called Pinatex that will replace the use of leather. Pinatex is made of pineapple leaf fiber. Piñatex production does not require land, water, pesticides, fertilizers. More importantly, there is no harmful waste as by-product. What Hijosa did is that he employs Filipino local farmers to collect pineapple leaves and extract fiber from them. All these fibers are then transported to Spain for processing into non-woven fabrics, which are sold worldwide. These non-woven materials and canvas have a similar appearance and has four colors: dark gray, cream, brown, and gold. It also has a durable texture. The material can be mass-produced, processed into shoes, bags, furniture, and even extended to the automobile and aviation sectors.
