By Alyson Branscum Ginger Leach, an SCC Peer Mentor and student, re- cently heard the news that NBC’s Biggest Loser celebri- ty trainer Bob Harper had a heart-attack while at a New York City gym. Reportedly, the doctors there performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator (AED) twice before paramedics could arrive. After the incident, Leach said she began thinking: How many AEDs are there at SCC? Director of Security Kenny Estep had the answer: “There are two AEDs at SCC’s fitness centers, on the Somerset and Laurel campuses.” Estep said, “If someone has an emergency at the centers, the plan is to call 9-1-1.” Estep said, “The first responders should be the first noti- fied in an emergency situation.” Laurel and Somerset are the only locations with AEDs, while Casey, Clinton, McCreary, and Russell cen- ters have none at all.
