Trend snapshot: The social ‘clean-up’ Alex Brownsell Source: WARC Trends, March 2018 Downloaded from WARC Social media platforms are enacting major changes to the organisation of personal and professional posts due to scrutiny from lawmakers, concerned health experts and anxious advertisers. In January, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced the platform was cutting back on the levels of “public content” from advertisers and publishers, and shifting the balance towards posts from family and friends in a bid to create more meaningful social interactions. The news feed changes had a swift impact on Facebook’s user engagement figures, with collective time users spent on the platform declining by around 5%, while content creators noticed an immediate decrease in video views.
