On New Year’s Day, 1929, Georgia Tech played UCLA in the Rose Bowl, a game made famous by Roy Riegels who recovered a fumble and ran sixty-five yards in the wrong direction. One of his teammates ran him down and tackled him just before he scored for the opposing team. During halftime, Coach Price said little except to say, “Men, the same team that played the first half will start the second.” The players got up and started out, all but Riegels. The coach looked back and called to him. Riegels didn’t move. Coach Price went over to where Riegels sat and said, “Roy, didn’t you hear me?” Roy looked up, with tears in his eyes. “Coach,” he said, “I can’t do it. It’s over.” Most people have run the wrong direction at some time. We get turned around. We lose our bearing. We may even get caught in the process. It is a common experience.
