Challenging Drama Conventions My short film is a drama but only because of its use of realistic characters, settings and scenarios. Its purpose is also to provoke an emotional response from the viewer which is another convention of the drama genre. However my short film does challenge some conventions of this genre: Because of the short run time of the film we are making (around 5 minutes) there isn’t really any time for the development of a character. This is another defining aspect of the genre. Usually we are presented with a character that goes on a sort of journey, either literally or metaphorically, the audience witnesses their whole experience. Drama films usually end with all questions answered and feuds are finished, either through compromise or tragedy. However my short film is openly structured so there is no final ending to the film, just the memories left for the audience to think about.
