Plant closings, layoffs and downsizing are an unfortunate part of the modern world economy. Workers will be laid off and terminated based on profits margins being met or not met. Having worked at Black and Decker when it closed in the mid 1980's and since then, with downsized employees of Xerox, Kodak and the United States Postal Service, I have found that what is certainly a major loss and change in a worker's life, can lead to more training, education, income, job stability and a better way of life. Terminations need to be examined from many angles, including one that recognizes the need for support, understanding, empathy, and optimism as well as finding the best occupational and training options for a client. I have found that religious and spiritual support is very helpful, too. I am an active member of St. Joseph's Parish in Penfield, NY and philanthropy is a very big part of my community involvement.
