Brownfield residents probably haven’t noticed a change, but their tap water has come from local wells in recent days, instead of the usual supply from a Roberts County well field and Lake Meredith while the Canadian River Municipal Water Authority fixes a leak in its 50-yearold steel pipe that provides water to its 11 member cities. The water authority announced Dec. 31 that a leak in the main 72-inch pipeline would force its closure for repairs. CRMWA officials said the leak was in a section of the pipe buried about 13 feet deep near Fritch, which is close to Lake Meredith, northeast of Amarillo. Without providing a firm estimate of water lost through the leak, officials said it was in the millions of gallons, according to media reports. Kent Satterwhite, general manager of CRMWA, said the leak was due to corrosion in a 22-foot long section of the steel pipe.
