Avoiding Our Possessions Possessing Us By Joy Fry “How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!” Mark 10:23 JesusmadethiscommenttoHisdisciples after the rich ruler had chosen not to sell his possessions and follow Jesus. When the disciples reacted with amazement, Jesus repeated it again. He wanted to make sure they didn’t miss what He was saying. Why do many of us struggle with trusting God alone and putting Him above our treasured possessions? There may be several reasons. First, we fear losing the sense of security derived from things. We may assume if these are surrendered to God, we’d be robbed of contentment. We may think we will be left feeling empty or called to a life of poverty. Second, our identity may be attached to the things we own. Will our friends stick around if we give up our flashy car, boat, or big screen TV?
