On Tuesday, October 20, 1987, His Holiness Pope John Paul II celebrated a solemn Mass of the Holy Spirit in St. Peter's Basilica for the joint inauguration of the academic year by all the Pontifical Universities and Faculties of Rome. Fr. Vereecke, the Preside of the Academy was one of the principal concelebrants at the Mass. In celebration of the Marian Year, all priests present were invited by the Holy Father to concelebrate with him. In his homily, the Holy Father emphasized the prominent role Mary should play in the lives of students and professors. He called .ita «year dedicated in a particular way to her whom the Church has called "Sedes Sapientiae"». The official inauguration in the Accademia Alfonsiana of the academic year took place on Monday, November 9th, with a celebration of the Feast of Saint Alphonsus, Patron
