Grine !1 Mason Grine 03/16/14 A Brief History on Righteous Anger: From the Ancient Near East to Medieval Latin America In 1939, Norbert Elias argued the increased repression of emotions contributed to the formation of the modern state. His work did not gain popularity until the 60s and 70s when Social Darwinists used his ideology in their studies. In the recent decades, emotional1 historians such as William Reddy and Barbara Rosenwein developed different approaches to the historical study of emotions. The rising field of the history of emotions has a bright future, as historians re-analyze previous work to see where the study of emotions can make previously unseen connections and provoke new thoughts. 2 As an amateur historian, I will briefly trace the history of righteous anger throughout written history.
