Year 5’s are Poets and they didn’t even know it! Last term, Year 5 explored poetry in English. They started the unit with a wonderfully successful series of workshops entitled “Poetry in the Park” where students engaged in a variety of activities, including ‘soapbox’ style poetry readings, to build confidence in poetry recitation set amongst the beautiful backdrop of the Strand and Anzac Park. The purpose of the workshops was to experiment with voice, movement, drama and choral speaking in a large, open public space to encourage students to think, move, speak and act with confidence as they actively use body, gesture, movement, voice and language to take on roles to explore and depict real and imagined worlds. The unit culminated in the students writing, publishing and submitting their very own poems into a national poetry competition “Red Room Poetry Object”, providing an authentic purpose and audience for their poetry.
