Why Explosion Proof Motors Are Essential
For a location where flammable gases and vapors are a frequent threat, selecting the right
explosion proof motor is truly essential. It is essential in these areas that the motor remains safe
against ignition. An awareness of this importance increases the difficulty of determining the right
motor.
In order to be an acceptable choice, the motor must be approved for its designated Class
locations. Sometimes, workers may feel that the motor is explosion proof merely because it has
been in operation in a dangerous location. This does not necessarily mean that the motor is
qualified as a Class I motor simply because it has been used around explosive gasses or ignitable
dust. Chapter 5 in the National Electrical Code needs to be consulted to learn more about
hazardous locations.
