To conserve movie theater, Hollywood pictures should be
about ideas that are fresh again
There is a film maker a little man standing onstage, covered in chained and Christmas tree lights
into a bull horn. The filmmaker rants about the price of melons these times, his household, his
government, how we can't get his girlfriend to climax, a book he read and his grandfather's nose
hairs. He spits on the audience and makes weird noises insults them. People shout and throw things
and sometimes someone shouts. Absolutely, no one would pay to see this. Much less allow them into
their family room.
The purpose of artwork was never only to cause you to feel good. Film is intended to enlighten, to
say all the things that you just dared not utter
But art's purpose was never merely to allow you to feel good. It was to face you with the monsters
sitting with you in the Wimbledon Odeon, nausea vision of your-self and a shrieking. And you may be
enlightened by it. Confrontation is the name of the sport
