When should I be tested for HIV ?
It’s always safe and sensible to get tested as there could be several cases of HIV infection
around us and incidences of HIV infection are also on a rise. Nearly 25% of people with an
infection are completely unaware of their position. HIV is not contracted, as is commonly
assumed, through homosexual relations. In 2011, for example, as many as 48% of new
infections were contracted via heterosexual sex. In many cases, HIV can be symptomless and
it may be impossible to say whether someone is infected by a visual examination. Therefore,
getting tested is the only way to assess someone’s HIV status. If you have never been tested
for HIV, now might be the time to think about getting it done. It’s also recommended that you
get tested at least twice a year if you perform practices that can transmit a HIV infection,
practices that include, but aren’t limited to:
Having injected narcotic drugs or anabolic steroids with shared injection needles.
