If and when there is ever a discharge or potential release of
dangerous materials, a certified hazmat technician is conditioned
to respond. With the intent to plug up, patch or otherwise stop the
release of harmful substances, the technician directly approaches
the origin of the leak. This job requires the technician to have
specific and ongoing hazmat training to stay on top of the best
methods for responding to an emergency.
It is vital that the hazmat technician be familiar or be able to
swiftly become familiar with the employer's emergency response
strategy in case there is an incident. Training provides techniques
for identifying and classifying material utilizing field survey
instruments and equipment. Learning how to assess the situation
for risk is also a benefit of the training. Utilizing the available
resources, containment and confinement operations can be put
into place by the technician from this point.
