C A M P A I G N P L A N N I N G S T U D Y F A C T S H E E T THE FIRST STEP St. Mary’s Mission traces its roots back to the 1830’s when twenty Native Americans were baptized by the missionary Fr. Frederic Baraga. They migrated over the lakes of northern Minnesota and eventually settled in Red Lake. Fr. Pierz made his first mission visit to Red Lake in 1855. He had an apparition of the Cross of Christ stretching across the moonlit sky in rainbow colors and pronounced Red Lake “full of fair hope.” For the past 130 years, St. Mary’s Mission has been a steadfast beacon of this hope, faith, and love for the Native people of Red Lake. SINCE ITS OFFICIAL FOUNDATION IN 1888, ST. MARY’S MISSION HAS BEEN COMMITTED TO PROVIDING A CATHOLIC EDUCATION TO THE CHILDREN OF RED LAKE.
