EASTER SEASON FROM HOME THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER – THE ROAD TO EMMAUS FROM DOUBT TO FAITH Today’s Gospel places us on the road to Emmaus with two of Jesus’ disciples. Reflecting on Jesus’ death, they are left feeling discouraged and hopeless. Like the apostle Thomas, they did not yet understand the scriptures or Jesus’ own preaching about his death and resurrection. They were slow to believe the joyful testimony that Jesus had indeed risen from the dead. You might think that Jesus would be upset with them for their lack of faith. But instead Jesus meets his friends where they are. He responds to their doubt and disbelief with understanding and compassion. Gradually, he opens their eyes and transforms their discouraged hearts into hearts burning with love and hope. As we celebrate this Third Sunday of Easter, we may feel a bit like those two disciples as they walked the road to Emmaus – confused, afraid or discouraged. Remember, Jesus is ready to meet us where we are, too. He is inviting
