Let's first define bad breath; it is scientifically called "halitosis", it is the bad odor or
smell of the mouth, which occurs occasionally or may also be chronic, usually caused
by the food we eat, poor oral health/hygiene, or if you have medical conditions, and
other factors.
So who are the usual suspects?
1. The Food We Eat - is the main source of bad smells coming out of our
mouths. Foods like garlic, onions, other spicy foods, curry or other exotic
spices, some cheeses, seafood, coffee and other acidic beverages leave a
lasting smell. In most of these cases, the effect is short term, but there may be
some food leftover between the teeth that breeds bacteria which is where the
odor comes from.
Low "Carb" diets may also trigger "ketone breath", these types of diets force
the body to use fat as its source of energy. The by-product of producing this
energy is the ketones, which is the reason for a fruity and acetone-smelling
breath.
