Any significant change in your normal dietary intake will disrupt the 'ecosystem' of organisms in
your gut, by starving the ones that have been digesting whatever-it-was-you-gave-up-eating.
Because some of your normal 'gut flora' are dying off (they all digest very specific foods, and will
starve without their specialised food source), some of your usual nutrition is not available. Other
organisms will also be able to out-compete the group that is doing badly, disrupting the system even
more.
This disruption will often lead to weight loss (it is a form of malnutrition), and it allows diet gurus to
claim that their new 'wonder diet' really works. In any group of people, some will react strongly in
this way; others will not suffer much disruption because the 'recipe' of bacteria in their gut is more
'robust'. These people are ignored in the statistics produced to support the diet.
