x The former Himalayan kingdom of Mustang is an arid and starkly beautiful land. Long
protected from mass tourism, its allure has come from its inaccessibility and its reputation as a
last bastion of traditional Tibetan culture. For centuries the kingdom channeled the wealth it
amassed as a conduit for trade with Tibet into its monasteries, creating some of the finest
remaining frescos in the Tibetan world. In common usage, the name Mustang refers to the arid,
Tibet-like region (known to its inhabitants as Lo) at the northern end of the Kali Gandaki.
Mustang is probably a Nepali mispronunciation of the twon of Manthang, the capital of Lo. The
name is pronounced ‘Moo-stang’ and has nothing to do with either the automobile or wild horse.
