Gold's Gym, which was specifically designed and tailored for men, opened in 1965 by a man named Joe
Gold in Venice Beach, California. His goal was to keep the gym environment simple and provide top quality
custom made equipment for serious and dedicated bodybuilders.
Joe Gold was a local bodybuilder at the time who worked out at the well known "Muscle Beach" in Southern
California. He decided to open up a small commercial space for weight training and soon enough
bodybuilding champions from around the world began to gather there together to share their knowledge.
Gold's Gym grew to become a hot spot for tourists to visit due to the fact that it attracted many famous
Hollywood personalities, such as former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and was featured in
the movie Pumping Iron in 1977. In 1987 the iconic Old Joe T-shirt began to be sold at retail stores all over
the world and by 2004 it became the world's largest gym chain.
