Weekly News 26 September 2014 O nce completed Vietnam’s first four-reactor plant, under construction in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan, will have a capacity of 1,000 MW. Electricity demand in Vietnam is expected to rise by an average of 11% a year from 2015 through to 2020, according to the Asian Development Bank. To dent rising electricity demand, state-owned PetroVietnam is likely to start importing coal next year from Australia and Indonesia– two years earlier than anticipated – to feed new coal power capacity coming onstream while mining output of coal in the northern Qang Ninh province slags. Taping domestic gas for mega power gen project Gas-fired power will also make up for much of the delayed nuclear capacity, as domestic gas production is poised to skyrocket once ExxonMobil starts moving ahead on a $10 billion natural gas and power project by 2015.
