T hough Turkey is only slightly larger than Texas, just about 4,400 wells have been drilled in search of shale gas since 1940. Hydrocarbon developers see Turkey as a 'somewhat unchartered territory' as most shale oil and gas formations are still unexplored. "Exploration is in its infancy," Lee Muncy, VP for geosciences at TransAtlantic Petroleum commented, but underlined experts assume that Turkey has a rather complex geology. The Dadas formation in south-eastern Turkey, discovered by Shell in the mid-1960s, has seen much drilling activity over the past years. Located on the Arabian plate, the Dadas comprises two zones and the formation's geologic structure is analogous to the Oklahoma Woodford shale gas play in North America. Several developers, including TransAtlanti, have already produced shale oil from the Dadas. Lying at a depth of 7,000-10,000 feet, the formation has a thickness of 300-800 feet and is organically rich with total organic carbon between 3-12%, Ro of 0.5-1%, and a p
