UNIT 1 Introduction to
Social Enterprise
The starting point for the study of any topic is
often to provide a definition, defining the key
terms that we are studying. We have a problem
with ‘social enterprise’ as a term, however,
because there is still a lot of debate about a
definition. We will come back to definitions in a
while, but first I was to ask a slightly different
question.
What is social enterprise for?
This, I think is a better question than ‘what is
social enterprise’. I think that the question makes
our study of social enterprise purposeful. It
seems to me that social enterprise the PURPOSE
of social enterprise is ‘making the world a
slightly better place’. But there are lots of
different ways of making the world a better place
