Diesel generators: Essential to the systems
The function of the diesel generators is to produce back up electrical supply to essential
systems, to facilitate safe shutdown of the station in case of emergency.
Modern technology demands power. The operation of a generator is based on Faraday’s law
of electromagnetic induction. If a coil or winding is linked to a varying magnetic field, then
electromotive force or voltage is induced across the coil. Thus, a generator has two
necessary parts: one that creates a magnetic field and the other where the energy is induced.
The magnetic field is characteristically generated by electromagnets. Every diesel genset will
be slightly different due to the size and configuration of the major components. Proper sizing
of the generator is crucial to the success of any installation and requires a good working
knowledge of electricity and its characteristics, as well as the varying requirements of the
electrical equipment comprising the load.
