Service closures and cuts take Queensland’s HIV response the wrong
way
The HIV community sector is dismayed by the recent decisions to close Brisbane’s primary Sexual
Health Service and to severely limit the capacity of its HIV Clinic in Roma Street, Biala.
Under the restructure, the Sexual Health Service which has been the key site for HIV & STI screening
will close completely. In addition, the HIV clinic – which has provided clinical care for more than 600 HIV
positive patients – will be reduced to only manage a small number of complex cases, effectively leaving
the majority of Brisbane’s HIV positive population without access to specialist care.
“The proposal that these services will be picked up by the primary health sector fails to acknowledge a
