BACKGROUNDER
Founded in 1949, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society is the world’s largest voluntary
health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services.
LLS funds blood cancer research and provides free information and support services. LLS has
provided more than $750 million in research funding since 1954.
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s main mission is to “cure leukemia, lymphoma,
Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.”
The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society was inspired by the experience of a family losing a
son to leukemia in 1944. The foundation was originally named the Robert Roesler de Villiers
Foundation, named after the son who died of leukemia. The foundation quickly grew and was
renamed the Leukemia Society and later combined with the Lymphoma Society.
