Edgar Allan Poe is considered to be one of the founders of modern psychological
thriller and short story. Poe’s works show an overall predilection to the grotesque and
macabre. In most of his stories like “The tell-Tale heart” that was published in 1843 in the
magazine The pioneer, the author uses plenty of black elements such as murder, death,
madness, melancholy and torture. Each author has his own way to create suspense in a
story; in the short story The Tell-Tale heart, Poe creates suspense by using first person
narrative and by repeating words and phrases.
