Case studies presented above all point to one thing
In 1998 the impasse continues. The government ban remains in place in
the absence of a comprehensive broadcast law governing both
terrestrial and satellite television. However, STAR TV continues to
expand its commercial operations in India. Just before the 1998
elections, it announced the launch of a 24-hour news channel called
STAR News. In a remarkable public relations coup, STAR TV launched
the channel with the blessings of the then Prime Minister Inder Kumar
Gujral from the lawns of 7 Race Course Road, the Prime Minister's
official residence. The new channel was very well received and its
coverage of the Indian election won it many plaudits. In the process,
STAR TV also changed the way in which Indian elections are conducted.
For the first time, television emerged as the dominant medium, leaving
its print media rivals far behind.
