John was very happy after the war. After the war, he went to the Far East but when he arrived in India the Americans launched the atom bomb and the war was over. He was always happy when he saw his family. The fightings at Hill 112 were a very bad experience and he will never forget this. He often comes back in Normandy but he can't explain why. After the war he joined a friend as a farmer for 2 years but, it was not very successful. Then he qualified as a lighting engineer and worked during 40 years. He came back to Normandy for the first time in 1949, he visited Hill 112 on a bike with his wife. There were many vehicles which were being cut up to get the scrap iron. He recognised the trenches exactly like they were in 1944, 5 years later, they were still there. He has difficulties to explain his feeling when he came back to Normandy for the first time, he thought it was very interesting but also very sad.
