The purpose of the study is to determine the key factors of college suicide ideation.
A two-stage
sampling design was employed.
First, a screening questionnaire was administered to first-year students—
ages seventeen to nineteen— at a large, public university in the mid-Atlantic region.
Of these surveys, all
students with a prior history of illicit drug use were asked to participate, and students without a history of
illicit drug use were randomly sampled from pools stratifying race and sex.
1,249 students elected to
participate in the study.
Perceived social support, alcohol and drug abuse, parent-child conflict,
depression symptoms, and suicide ideation were assessed through periodical, self-administered surveys
designed to measure subjective perceptions.
