The clay covered stone floated into the white, chalky hole at our feet, “Until November,

” Edith said, turning and walking back toward the shadowed lunar surface behind
us.
I arched my helmet upward to for one final glance at the Earth 239,025 miles away, as it will
be for the next sixty years.
“I’m sorry.
I didn’t mean to live.
I hope I make you proud.
” I said, dropping my own bag
of treasures into the crudely dug hole.
I used my metallic boot to kick the white dirt and bits of
scorched (but for some reason still white) asteroid back into the hole until it was full.
I took the
red toothpick Edith had stolen from the cafeteria pod back at our colony the day before and
stabbed it into the middle of the loose soil.
