Cigarroa said the Texas Legislature is
close to providing a mechanism for the
state to increase its national research
institutions.
Cigarroa spoke at a Senate committee hearing on Higher Education on
Wednesday.
“This will be, in my opinion, a remarkable achievement that will transform Texas and also save lives,” he
said.
“Texas is engaged in a national
and global competition for talent,
knowledge and innovation, and we really enjoy that.
National research universities bring together a critical mass
of talent that really fosters scientific
and economic vibrancy for our state.
”
For example, look at what Stanford
did for Silicon Valley and what Harvard and Massachusetts Institute of
Technology did for Boston, he said.
“Today Texas has a unique competitive advantage while other states are
cutting budgets,” he said.
“This really
gives us a unique opportunity to attract the finest faculty to come to our
universities
