TENURE continues on page 2

Attaining the title of a national research
university requires a collective effort, a great
deal of which comes from the university
faculty.
With the university’s push to become a
nationally recognized research institution,
or Tier One, professors on track for tenure
or already tenured are encouraged to pursue
their research ideas with increased effort,
as one of the criteria for Tier One is 1,000
tenure-track faculty.
In 2008, the university had 222 tenure-track and 411 tenured
faculty.
Some science faculty members said
they are trying to work harder to not only
help themselves by gaining tenure but also
to improve the stature of their respective
department and college.
