February celebrates
Black History Month and
activities start today with a
Faculty and Staff Mixer
open to everyone at noon in
the University Center Bluebonnet Ballroom.
Fred Henry, Office of
Multicultural Services director, said he will speak
about Black History Month
at the mixer.
Henry, also associate
dean of students, said
Carter G.
Woodson, author
of The Miseducation of the
Negro, started Negro History Week in 1926.
“It was thought that
African-Americans had not
made a major contribution
to society,” Henry said.
“His
idea was to show the contributions made to society.
”
The second week of February was selected because
it is between the birthdays
of abolitionist leader Frederick Douglass and former
U.
S.
President Abraham
Lincoln, according to

The mixer will include a
trivia game where a faculty
or staff member will be
teamed with three students.
