alumna Kalpana
Chawla Monday in
Nedderman Hall.
Chawla, the
first Indian-born
woman to visit
space, earned her
master’s degree in
aerospace engineering from
UTA in 1984.
She went on
to receive her Ph.
D.
from the
University of Colorado in
1988 before joining NASA
the same year.
Chawla and
six other astronauts died
when STS-107 Columbia,
a 16-day dedicated science
and research mission, broke
apart reentering the atmosphere on Feb.
1, 2003.
Some of Chawla’s close
friends attended Monday’s
dedication ceremony.
