Bed Races celebrated its 30th
anniversary on Thursday with flair
as more than 1,900 students, many
garbed for the event’s ’80s theme,
flocked to Maverick Stadium.
Knee-high socks
and spandex were
in abundance as a
DJ blasted moodsetting hits from
’80s artists like
Aerosmith and the
B-52s.
Many teams, like the University
Martial Arts Association, put special
thought and effort into their ’80s costuming.
The club’s members, including history senior Ricky Pence, painted their upper bodies to resemble the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
“I figured what better represents
the ’80s and martial arts than the
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,”
Pence said.
Though this was his first Bed
Races, he said he felt confident in
his team and their costumes.
“I’m feeling good, feeling strong,”
Pence said.
“I’m feeling the inspiration of the Teenage
Mutant Ninja Turtles
right now, you know.
I think I’m channelling it.
”
His group went on
to win the prize for
the “Be
Less
