The development of English as an additional language through
classroom participation
Lynne Cameron, University of Leeds
My concern as a language education researcher and teacher educator over the last ten
years has been to understand more about the learning and teaching of EAL pupils in
mainstream classes.
Learning through participation in mainstream classes is the main
plank of curriculum policy for EAL pupils, with specialised support for language
development often only available for those relatively new to English.
My current
work at Key Stages 3 and 4 show clearly that aspects of language skills remain to be
developed even after 10 years in English medium education.
A central theme to this
chapter is the need to move beyond the current approach to EAL by acknowledging
that this continuing need for EAL development, together with the wide range of EAL
levels and backgrounds in UK schools, requires the deployment of a wider range of
teaching and learning strategies.
