A Mouth-Watering Chocolate History
Surely, you love chocolate! Who doesn t? But have you ever wondered how
chocolate was first discovered? The first chocolate that roused our ancestors
taste buds was actually drunk rather than eaten.
The chocolate residue that was
discovered in an ancient pot used by the Mayans suggests that Mayans were
drinking chocolate around 2,600 years ago.
This is the earliest record of human
consumption of cacao.
The Aztecs even believed that cacao seeds came from Paradise and anyone
who ate them would be blessed with energy and spiritual wisdom.
They also
believed that it is a gift from Xochiquetzal, their goddess of fertility.
Thus,
whoever eats the seeds will be given enhanced sexual powers.
Chocolate is also used in a
bitter and spicy beverage
called xocoatl.
In 1519, an
Aztec leader named
Montezuma II, offered Hernan
Cortex, a Spanish
conquistador a beverage made
from cocoa beans called
xocoatl.
Hernan Cortex then
introduced xocoatl to Spain.
