Walking into Dr.
Gary Keever’s office felt like walking into any professor’s office.
There
were books—a lot of books—a desk, chairs and a computer.
Then the eye is drawn to
the old plow he has in the corner of the room.
Another glance and there is a piece of a
tree.
Keever, a professor of Horticulture at Auburn University, sits behind his desk and begins
to tell stories about his life, research and work with the Toomer’s Corner trees.
“I had
never been to Alabama before my visit to Auburn,” he said.
“I felt so welcomed here
and it was low stress compared to Cornell.
I also liked the climate.
”
The South Carolina native attended Clemson University for his bachelor’s degree, and
went on to attend Cornell University for his master’s and Doctorate degrees.
After living
in the frigid climate of upstate New York, Keever applied for a position at Auburn and
began teaching in 1982.
