A Yiddish proverb describes how most citizens view the hunger situation in America: “If you sit
in a hot bath, you think the whole town is warm.
” The fortunate are aplenty here, but there are
those that aren’t quite as fortunate.
The food insecurity rate in Alabama is 19.
2 percent.
A number that is well above the national
average of 16.
1 percent, according to the Feeding America Map the Gap study.
In other words,
one in five people in the state struggle with keeping food on the table—and there are places that
try to do something about it.
Bring in the Food Bank of East Alabama.
Tucked in an industrial park in Auburn, Ala.
, the
20,000 square foot facility boasts freezers, a market place, and a large storage and salvage area.
It is one of eight food banks sponsored by the Feeding America network.
