Stem cell research surges
forward with new advances
Insights
Spurred by ethical issues surrounding human
cloning and the use of embryonic stem cells,
scientists have been in a furious race to
discover new ways to obtain stem cells for
research.
In November, two independent
teams on opposite sides of the globe achieved
that goal by creating stem cells from human
skin cells.
The discovery is being hailed as a
major breakthrough that could speed up the
development of new drugs for a number of
diseases and conditions.
Until recently, the only method of obtaining
stem cells in the United States was through
embryos created by in vitro fertilization, a
controversial process that involves destruction
of the embryo.
A few countries allow
researchers to clone embryos for that purpose.
